Frequently Asked Questions

When does your next book come out?
The second installment of the "The Adventures of Izzy Adams" series is slated for release in the fall of 2024.

How many books will be in The Adventures of Izzy Adams series?
The series will encompass a total of six books, and I have plans for two additional spin-off series.

Are the characters in your book based on people that you know?
Izzy and Rhylynn, characters in my stories, draw inspiration from my two daughters. They share names, physical resemblances, and certain traits—like Rhylynn’s distinct fashion sense and her fondness for llamas. Additionally, elements of my grandmother inadvertently found their way into some of the older characters. For instance, Izzy’s Auntie A’s penchant for cats mirrors my Grandma Kathy’s own affinity. Beyond these personal inspirations, my characters are crafted to serve the story and have their own unique personalities.

Did you always know that you wanted to be a writer?
From a young age, writing was second nature to me. I’d spend hours crafting stories and piecing together ‘newspapers’ for my dad. My passion was recognized early on, earning me a writer’s award in grade eight. This love for storytelling led me to pursue creative writing courses throughout high school and university. My grandmother's passing cemented my resolve to write a book — a tribute she sadly won’t get to read. But her memory inspires me to write, ensuring that other loved ones will get the chance to read my stories.

How do you get inspired to write/stay motivated to finish a book? Do you have a writing routine? A place where you write, or a certain amount of time you write per day?
Inspiration strikes me constantly. Whether I'm out and about or just in the throes of daily life, ideas often emerge unexpectedly. I've made a habit of texting these fleeting thoughts to myself to revisit later. I've carved out a nightly writing ritual to stay motivated, dedicating four hours each evening after my children are tucked into bed. I also seize a few daytime hours when the boys nap. While I'd love to say I pen my thoughts on a sun-kissed beach or beside a serene lake, the reality is my cozy recliner in the living room. With four children, an office is a luxury at the moment.

Did you take any specific classes to become a writer?
While I've taken a few creative writing courses during my academic journey, most of my learning comes from personal and educational experiences. I am currently taking courses toward a certificate in editing through Queen's University.

What kind of research did you do for your book?
Over a span of four years, I delved deeply into subjects such as demonology, witchcraft, symbolism, spiritualism, and astral projection. Additionally, I engaged in enlightening conversations with psychics and individuals passionate about the afterlife, enriching my understanding and perspective.

Do you know where the story is going when you sit down to write it? Do you outline?
Each writer has their unique approach, but for me, meticulously outlining my entire series chapter by chapter proved most effective. This intensive process spanned almost two years, given other obligations in my life. Such a comprehensive outline has anchored my storyline, minimizing potential inconsistencies or gaps.

I found a typo in one of your books!
Even with thorough editing, typos can sneak in due to human oversight or production errors. No matter how often we read something, tiny mistakes can go unnoticed. It's all part of the journey of creating stories!
